Built in 1965, Qingdao Museum is an integrated local museum of history and arts. It is one of China first batch of Class-I museums and a key unit for ancient books protection. This building is the formaer Qingdao Taoist Temple, so the model of it is based on the architecture style of Confucian Temple in Qufu.
Qingdao Museum covers a total area of 3600 square meters, of which 1800 square meters is exhibition area. The main building of the museum has three floors above ground and one story underground, and includes 16 exhibition halls and a winding corridor. Now there are more than 80,000 pieces of collections with over 30 categories in Qingdao Museum, the most famous works of which are Chinese paintings and works of calligraphy, pottery, ancient coins, jade wares, and other historical relies and works of art. Many of them are rare treasures in the world.
Except for those rare collections, there is also a permanent show entitled “The History of Qingdao” and five other special shows on ancient coins, porcelain arts from Ming and Qing Dynasties, Gao Fenghan’s paintings and calligraphy, woodcut New Year pictures, ancient crafts and arts, and so on. These exhibitions are aim to present the Qingdao’s history and the broad collection of artifacts of the museum. Besides, there are temporary shows of artworks and cultural relics of different themes on an irregular basis.
The museum has a public service area where data show and query and electronic guide services in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean languages are provided. Other facilities include an auditorium, VIP reception room, visitors lounge and shopping facilities. Visitors may also feel different cultures in the special areas for modern arts, visitor interaction and selected works appreciation.
Qingdao Museum has become an important cultural center in Qingdao, an important window on the Chinese culture and Qingdao history and culture and an important bridge connecting Chinese and foreign cultures.
