HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to open on October 23

According to the liaison office of the central government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will officially open on October 23rd. The bridge connects the east and west sides of the Pearl River Delta in South China. After the opening ceremony, the bridge is expected to open for traffic later in the day, the source said.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is a bridge-island-tunnel complex of 55 kilometers’ long, which across the Pearl River Delta. It will become the longest cross-sea bridge in the world. The project also includes a 6.7 kilometers’ undersea tunnel. The tunnel links to the bridge via two artificial islands. The total cost of the bridge is about 120 billion RMB (17.3 billion USD).

Chief engineer of the bridge’s project, Lin Ming, said he’s thrilled to see the date finally fixed for the grand opening. Lin spent 12 years on the construction of the bridge. The main bridge, located in Chinese mainland waters, will be managed by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority located in Zhuhai. The bridge’s opening will help boost the economic development in the Greater Bay Area, and facilitate the flow of people, goods, capital and services in the region.
