From August 15 to 17, the First Folk Dance and Modern Dance Festival will be held at Xining, the provincial capital of China’s northwest Qinghai province.
For Qinghai’s geographic position, along main crossroads of ancient civilizations, it is home to a variety of ethnic groups, all have contributed a lot to the various dance genres. In order to add a modern flavor to the traditional dances, hundreds of dancers from around the world are invited to share their dances with local folk dancers. Furthermore during the festival, lectures on protecting and developing folk dances will be held.
Xining was the passing channel of Silk Road. It hosts about 37 nationalities, and the local traditions and customs are influenced by these distinctive nationalities, in particular the Tibetan group.
