Chengdu Leshan Giant Buddha is under repairs

According to the Sichuan local government, the Leshan Giant Buddha is now under maintenance since October. There are a few cracks and some damages in the abdomen part of Leshan Giant Buddha because of the overload tourism capacity. Therefore, during the repair process, the Buddha will be covered and cannot be seen by the visitors.

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a stone statue with a height of 71 meters, which was built during the Tang Dynasty. It has such a long history and the worldwide fame. It is carved out of a cliff face of Cretaceous red bed sandstones that lies at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River in the southern part of Sichuan Province. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.

The Leshan Giant Buddha was nearly destroyed due to the erosion of wind and rain in the early years. At present, the Buddha has the regular maintenance work supported by the local government. The repair work is also in progress under the instruction of experts from UNESCO.
